Call me his excellency – Wode Maya after diplomatic passport honour

Ghanaian YouTuber Wode Maya has reacted to the diplomatic passport that the Government of Ghana honoured him and other distinguished creatives with, describing the moment as a “dream come true.”

In an Instagram post on Wednesday, 17 September, the digital storyteller, known for his Africa-focused vlogs, expressed deep gratitude to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

“We’ve been on this incredible journey showcasing Ghana and the African continent to the world and never in my wildest dreams did I think a proud village boy like me would be holding a diplomatic passport. I’m truly humbled and deeply grateful to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ghana,” he wrote.

In his signature light-hearted tone, Wode Maya added a playful message to his followers: “From today, don’t just call me Maya, call me His Excellency. If you see me at the airport, please, no more ‘bro, bro’… it’s now ‘Your Excellency, Maya’.”

Born Berthold Kobby Winkler Ackon, Wode Maya has emerged as one of Africa’s most influential digital voices. Through his platform, he has documented underreported success stories, challenged stereotypes and championed youth-driven narratives across the continent.

The diplomatic passport was presented to Wode Maya and four other honourees at the official media launch of the 2025 Diaspora Summit in Accra.

The recipients included Dentaa Amoateng, Grammy-nominated reggae artiste Rocky Dawuni, broadcaster Anita Erskine and acclaimed visual artist Ibrahim Mahama.

The Ministry celebrated them for their outstanding contributions in promoting Ghana and Africa to global audiences.

All five were formally appointed as ambassadors for the upcoming summit, scheduled for 19 to 20 December 2025.
