Tema–Mpakadan rail to start full operations October 1

The long-awaited Tema–Mpakadan railway line will officially begin full commercial operations on 1 October 2025, following the successful completion of all technical and safety assessments, Transport Minister Joseph Bukari Nikpe has announced.
Speaking at the Government Accountability Series in Accra on Wednesday, 17 September, Mr Nikpe confirmed that test runs conducted over several weeks were completed without incident, clearing the way for passenger and freight services.
“We have done a test run on the Tema–Mpakadan rail line and it ended yesterday. So, by 1 October, God willing, we will start the first operations from Tema to Mpakadan. We have finished with the test runs, and everything is set for us to start operations,” the Minister said.
Mr Nikpe added that the necessary rolling stock is already in place to ensure a smooth launch.
“The two coaches have been fixed and that is why we are able to do the test runs,” he explained.
The Tema–Mpakadan line forms a key segment of Ghana’s Eastern Railway Corridor project, designed to improve transportation links between the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions.
The 100-kilometre route will facilitate the movement of goods and passengers, reduce road congestion and enhance trade along one of the country’s busiest economic corridors.
