‘Captain Ibrahim Traoré’ nominated for best African movie at New Zealand film festival

Ghanaian actor and producer Kwadwo Nkansah, popularly known as LilWin, has scored an international milestone with his latest film, ‘Captain Ibrahim Traoré’.
The movie has been nominated for Best African Movie at the prestigious New Zealand International Film Festival.
Announcing the news in a recent Instagram post, LilWin revealed that his film was selected out of more than 500 entries, with only ten productions making it to the final nominations list.
“The movie came out as an outstanding piece of work in over 500 movies, and only 10 movies were nominated,” LilWin shared, highlighting the recognition as a major achievement for Kumawood and African cinema.
Directed by veteran filmmaker Jackson K. Bentum, ‘Captain Ibrahim Traoré’ premiered on 2 August 2025 in Ghana to much anticipation and widespread media buzz.
The storyline chronicles how Captain Ibrahim Traoré rose to power in Burkina Faso following the coup of 30 September 2022, portraying him as both a symbol of anti-imperialist resistance and a figure of youth-driven reform.
The film has not only won international attention but also earned LilWin recognition in Burkina Faso, where Captain Ibrahim Traoré himself honoured the actor for bringing his story to the big screen.
