DSTV fined GH₵10,000 daily for failing to submit pricing data

MultiChoice Ghana, operators of DSTV, has been fined GHS10,000 per day by the Ministry of Communications for failing to submit required pricing data under the Electronic Communications Act.
The sanction, which took effect on Friday, 15 August 2025, was announced by Sector Minister Sam George during a tense meeting with DSTV executives in Accra.
The Minister revealed that the requested data, including a full breakdown of bouquet prices, tax components and comparative figures from at least six other African countries, was essential to ongoing efforts aimed at reducing subscription fees for Ghanaian consumers.
MultiChoice Ghana had been granted an extension until Monday, 11 August 2025, to comply with the directive.
However, the company failed to meet the deadline, triggering the automatic imposition of the daily fine.
“The law is clear, and we will enforce it. If necessary, we can freeze accounts to protect consumer interests,” Mr George remarked.
He emphasised that the fine is a statutory obligation under the ECA and is separate from ongoing negotiations with stakeholders.
The Ministry has further warned that if no agreement on price reductions is reached by 6 September 2025, DSTV’s operating licence could face suspension.
Mr George assured the public that once the data is received, it will be subjected to an independent and objective review.
He pledged to advocate for tax relief if the analysis reveals that high taxes are the primary driver of DSTV’s steep subscription rates.
“If not, we expect DSTV to comply with our directive to make subscriptions more affordable,” the Minister added.
