3,000 LED streetlights project to enhance security in Tema
The Mayor of Tema, Ebi Bright, has announced that government will soon install 3,000 LED streetlights across the city to improve visibility and enhance security for residents.
She made this known at the 20th Grand Durbar and Homecoming celebration of the St. John Methodist Church at the Tema Manhean Circuit, where she was the Special Guest of Honour.
According to her, the new streetlights will be designed as all-inclusive units to prevent parts removal and theft, which she noted is often linked to drug addicts.
“The planned installation of LED streetlights is not just about brightening our streets. We want to avoid the situation where people tamper with the lights for scrap. That is one of the challenges we have had. We are going to put all-inclusive streetlights to help us not only with lighting but also with our security challenges,” she said.
The mayor emphasised that the initiative forms part of broader measures to make Tema safer and more welcoming for residents and visitors.
She also revealed that the government plans to roll out other transformative projects, including youth employment programmes and skills development initiatives, aimed at creating jobs and addressing social challenges.
“We will be implementing several transformative initiatives to transform lives and shape a brighter future for our people. The Youth Employment Programme aims to equip young people with marketable skills and create jobs. We must also uproot drug and substance abuse among our youth in our communities,” the mayor added.
She also assured residents of Tema that the projects would not only tackle unemployment but also curb the growing menace of drug abuse, particularly among the youth.
