Otumfuo warns against politicising aircraft procurement

The Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged political leaders to avoid turning the procurement of presidential planes and helicopters into partisan debate, describing such acquisitions as matters of national security rather than political convenience.
Speaking at the Manhyia Palace during a courtesy call by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, the Asantehene’s remarks followed last week’s helicopter crash in Obuasi that claimed eight lives.
He described the incident as a “national concern” and extended condolences to President John Mahama and the bereaved families.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II stressed that aviation safety and security equipment procurement should be handled with urgency and seriousness.
“Enough of the politicising of the purchase of presidential planes and helicopters. Human lives are at stake here. We must invest to safeguard their safety and efficiency,” he said.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II noted that much of the military aircraft fleet is in poor condition, underscoring the need for investment in modern, reliable alternatives.
The Asantehene emphasised that failure to upgrade the fleet could compromise both safety and operational readiness.
Calling for a united approach, he urged all political actors to work together to address Ghana’s aviation and security logistics challenges.
“We must put the nation first and act to prevent future tragedies,” he stated.
The helicopter crash, which involved a military aircraft and claimed the lives of eight individuals including state officials, has reignited public debate about the state of the country’s aviation assets.
