Police taskforce seizes seven excavators in Bekwai anti-galamsey operation

The Inspector-General of Police’s Special Anti-Galamsey Taskforce has impounded seven excavators in a series of raids against illegal mining activities at Ahwiren, a small community in the Bekwai Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
The operation followed a request by the Chief of Ahwiren, Nana Osei Boateng, after reports emerged that miners, allegedly backed by influential figures, were operating dangerously close to St Joseph’s Senior and Technical High School and Ahwiren Methodist Primary and Junior High School.
An initial swoop led to the seizure of three excavators.
However, the miners allegedly regrouped, bringing in new equipment to continue their operations at the same site.
In a follow-up raid led by DSP Karim Mahama and ASP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the taskforce confiscated four more excavators.
The miners managed to flee the scene, but all the seized machinery has since been transported to the Regional Police Training School in Patasi, Kumasi, for safekeeping and further investigation.
