President John Dramani Mahama has announced plans to establish an Education Fund to support the children of those who perished in the 6 August military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region.
The President made the announcement on Tuesday, 12 August, during the third-day funeral rites (Adua) of Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed.
He said the fund would be officially launched at the state funeral scheduled for Friday, 15 August.
“There will be a state funeral on Friday, 15 August. At the funeral, we will announce some programmes for creating a fund that will assist with the education of the children. Friday, I will announce the details of that, so that people who want to contribute to the future of the children they have left behind will have the opportunity to do so,” President Mahama stated.
He expressed his condolences, praying for Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for the departed.
The initiative follows the tragic helicopter crash in the Adansi Akrofuom District, which claimed eight lives, including Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah; Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation Dr Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed; Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator Muniru Mohammed; former parliamentary candidate Samuel Aboagye; and NDC Vice Chairman Samuel Sarpong.
Also among the dead were Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala, Flying Officer Manin Twum-Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah.
On Sunday, 10 August, Ghanaians gathered to pay their final respects to Dr Murtala Muhammed and Muniru Mohammed.
The upcoming state funeral at Black Star Square will honour all the victims and serve as the platform for the formal unveiling of the Education Fund.
