Vice President calls for unity, healing after helicopter tragedy

The Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang has called on Ghanaians to channel the national grief over the tragic August 6 military helicopter crash into a moment of unity, sober reflection, and renewed dedication to the nation’s progress.
Speaking at a solemn Evening of Reflection and Memorial held on Saturday at the Forecourt of the State House, the Vice President said the loss of the eight service members was too profound to be captured in words.
“This is not a time for perfect words, nor a time for the right thoughts because there are none. Our colleagues served their nation and humanity with honor,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang reflected on the personal stories, shared memories, and quiet moments that now form lasting memories of the fallen officers.
She acknowledged the widespread sorrow felt not only by their families, friends, and colleagues, but also by countless others across the country, many of whom never knew the victims personally but grieve with them nonetheless.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang cautioned against using the tragedy for political gain, urging instead a focus on truth and accountability.
“This is a time for paying attention to detail and to facts, so that we can prevent such tragedies in the future,” she stated.
The Vice President also challenged the nation to reconsider the divisions it sustains.
“We must ask ourselves whether the unhelpful barriers we consciously build and maintain are worth it,” she noted, calling for unity to rise above adversity. “This is a time to wish our colleagues who perished in the line of duty peaceful rest. It is a time to pray for comfort for their families, and for all who mourn their loss,” the Vice President stressed.
