Ga East Municipal Assembly seizes excavators at illegal Ramsar site
The Ga East Municipal Assembly has impounded several excavators from an illegal construction project at a Ramsar site in Abokobi, intensifying concerns over wetland encroachment and environmental protection in Ghana.
According to the assembly, the project lacked permits and was encroaching on a protected wetland. Officials allege the work was carried out under the instructions of Ibrahim Faila, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the neighboring La Nkwantanang Municipality, who has since requested the release of the seized machinery.
The seizure comes just days after the government launched a crackdown on illegal structures on waterways and Ramsar sites in response to severe flooding in the Greater Accra Region.
Ramsar sites, recognized under the Ramsar Convention for their ecological value, play a vital role in flood control, water purification, and biodiversity preservation. Ghana, as a signatory, is mandated to protect them.
The alleged involvement of a government official has raised questions about the commitment to enforcing environmental laws.
While recent demolitions have demonstrated state action, critics say political interference often undermines conservation efforts.
Ga East officials insist the excavators will not be released and say legal action will proceed against those responsible.
