GPRTU debunks fare rise rumours

The Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) has debunked recent rumors suggesting that transport fares have been increased, stating categorically that no official fare adjustments have been made.
Speaking on ZED News, Alhaji Abbas Ibrahim Moro, Public Relations Officer of the GPRTU, urged commuters and drivers alike to disregard any unofficial announcements of fare hikes, describing them as false and misleading.
This comes as the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC) suspends the proposed 20 percent fare increase following intervention by the Ministry of Transport.
“There hasn’t been any transport increment for now. We are all looking for money, but we must look for it the right way,” he stressed.
Alhaji Moro emphasized that any adjustment in transport fares must go through due consultation and legal procedures.
He revealed that decisions made by the GPRTU are typically done in partnership with other major stakeholders, including the Ghana Road Transport Coordinating Council (GRTCC), to ensure transparency and accountability.
“Before we change fares, we have to present it to the general public. We are not in to cheat anybody. Everything we do is signed by both GPRTU and GRTCC because they also represent the minor unions,” Alhaji Moro stated.
He expressed surprise over the source of the misinformation, suggesting it may be driven by self-serving motives unknown to the union’s leadership.
“It is surprising and best known to them. When we are doing something, we invite them, we include them. So they know the motive behind what is done,” Alhaji Moro said.
He further cautioned drivers and passengers to respect the rule of law and not act outside approved guidelines, warning that anyone caught flouting fare regulations risks facing legal consequences.
“There are laws in this country. You just can’t go about doing things haphazardly. We must go by the laid-down procedures,” Alhaji Moro noted.
He reaffirmed that fare increases may happen in the future, but only when justified and officially communicated.
