GTEC moves to digitize accreditation for universities
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has announced plans to fully digitize its accreditation processes.
Starting yesterday, July 1, 2025, all tertiary institutions in the country are required to submit program accreditation applications electronically through GTEC’s new Accreditation Management Information System (AMIS).
Director-General of GTEC, Professor Ahmed Abdulai Jinapor, made the announcement at the 9th graduation ceremony of Perez University College in Accra over the weekend. He explained that the paperless system aims to cut down bureaucracy, reduce operational costs for universities, and speed up accreditation timelines.
“This move will reduce paperwork, enhance efficiency, and lower the cost burden on institutions,” Prof. Jinapor said, adding that the system is available 24/7, allowing institutions to submit applications at their convenience.
He confirmed that all 26 public universities including 16 traditional universities and 10 technical universities must now use AMIS for their accreditation processes.
The policy is part of GTEC’s broader commitment to improving the regulatory environment for higher education in Ghana. As the statutory body responsible for overseeing tertiary institutions, GTEC’s role includes accreditation, quality assurance, and ensuring access to globally competitive education standards.
Speaking to the graduating class of Perez University College, Prof. Jinapor challenged them to become ethical leaders, innovators, and professionals ready to shape Ghana’s future.
The graduation ceremony, which honored over 230 students, was themed “Redefining Ghana’s Future: Graduate at the Heart of Economic Reset and 24-hour Economy.”
