Smartphone addiction hurting students’ focus, academic performance — Psychologist

By: Solomon Nartey Tetteh

Clinical Psychologist Robertson David Mfodwo has raised alarm over the increasing impact of smartphone addiction on university students, warning that excessive phone use is interfering with learning and productivity.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed on Friday, June 20, 2025, Mr. Mfodwo said smartphones are becoming a major source of distraction, particularly during lectures, where many students use their devices for non-academic purposes.

“There are people who cannot live without a smartphone. They have become addicted to it, which is dangerous,” he stated.

The clinical psychologist noted that many individuals, including students, now struggle to stay focused on essential tasks due to constant phone use. This growing dependence, he said, is affecting not only academic performance but also daily life and mental discipline.

Recent studies echo his concerns, highlighting a steady increase in digital distraction and its negative effects on concentration and educational outcomes.

In Ghana, many university students have admitted to frequently using their phones in class for entertainment or social media, even during lessons.

Mr. Mfodwo advised students and the general public to be more mindful of their digital habits, emphasizing the need for balance and intentionality.

“Smartphones are addictive. It’s important to be disciplined so you don’t lose focus or become overly reliant on electronic devices,” he stressed.

Mr. Mfodwo therefore urged educational institutions and families to promote healthier digital behavior among youth to protect their academic and psychological well-being.
