No major malpractice reported as BECE 2025 kicks off

The 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) commenced yesterday, Wednesday, June 11, with more than 600,000 candidates (297,250 males and 306,078 females) sitting across the country.
Reports from various examination clusters indicate a smooth, well-organized start. The Ghana Education Service (GES), collaborating with WAEC, confirmed that examination papers and materials arrived on time at all centers visited, including the Accra Metropolitan Area and Kotobabi, with no delays noted.
Candidates reportedly arrived early, ready, and seated well before the start of the first paper, which included Social Studies and Computing.
A strong security presence was visible at centers, with police and security personnel ensuring order, verifying candidate IDs, and securing exam halls. The GES, WAEC, and GNAT reaffirmed a zero-tolerance policy on malpractice.
Minister for Education Haruna Iddrisu, who monitored centers in Bono East and Sunyani, reinforced the need for integrity, urging students to trust their preparation and “avoid any form of examination malpractice.”
No widespread malpractice has been reported thus far from official sources. However, a few outliers emerged: one candidate reportedly “abandoned” the exam at Duapompo M/A JHS to engage in ‘galamsey’ activities. Authorities consider this an isolated incident. The exam is expected to end on Wednesday, June 18. Candidates will sit subjects including English, Mathematics, Science, and Ghanaian Language. The GES has pledged to publish preliminary results within four weeks of the final paper, facilitating timely placements.
