GHS confirms six new Mpox cases as total hits 85

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has confirmed six new cases of Mpox, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 85 as of June 9, 2025.
In its latest situation update, the GHS clarified that no new deaths have been recorded, maintaining the country’s zero fatality rate since the outbreak began.
Health officials say only one person is currently admitted and receiving treatment, while the rest have either recovered or are being monitored at home.
Mpox, a viral illness related to smallpox, spreads primarily through close contact with infected individuals, including skin-to-skin contact, respiratory droplets, or contaminated materials such as bedding and clothing.
While health authorities describe the current situation as “under control,” they continue to urge the public to remain vigilant and practice strict preventive measures.
“We advise citizens to report early signs of infection and avoid close contact with individuals showing symptoms,” the GHS statement said.
The GHS is intensifying its surveillance, public education, and containment efforts to prevent further spread, especially in densely populated areas.
Common symptoms of Mpox include fever, headache, swollen lymph nodes, and a distinctive rash that can resemble chickenpox. Health authorities have reiterated the importance of personal hygiene and prompt medical attention for suspected cases. Members of the public are also advised to avoid handling wild animals or consuming bushmeat, as such practices are potential sources of infection.
