Early prostate screening can save lives

Medical herbalist at the Executive Prostate and Herbal Center, Dr. Bright Kwadwo Kewu, has emphasized the importance of early prostate screening for men, warning that delayed checks could lead to late-stage cancer diagnoses.
Speaking on the Zed Wellness Link, Dr. Kewu noted that many men present with symptoms such as frequent urination, difficulty urinating, or even blood in the urine—known medically as hematuria. However, he expressed concern that many individuals often ignore these warning signs until the condition worsens.
“In extreme cases, people come in only when the symptoms have aggravated, and unfortunately, for some, it turns out to be prostate cancer. It becomes emotionally difficult to break that news to them, especially when the cancer is already in an advanced stage,” Dr. Kewu said.
He stressed the need for regular screening, beginning as early as age 40, rather than waiting until age 50 or 60.
“The earlier you detect any issue, the better the chances of intervention and recovery. We keep advocating, don’t wait. Get your prostate checked early,” he advised.
Dr. Kewu urged the public to prioritize their health and listen to medical advice, as early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.
Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting men worldwide, particularly those aged 50 and above. In Ghana, late diagnosis remains a major challenge, often due to a lack of awareness, limited access to screening services, and stigma associated with men’s health issues. Many men seek medical attention only after symptoms have significantly worsened, leading to diagnoses at more advanced and less treatable stages.
