Japan pledges funding for Volivo bridge in Ghana’s infrastructure drive

Japan has confirmed its commitment to financing the construction of a bridge over Volta Lake at Volivo, a critical part of Ghana’s Eastern Corridor road project.
The pledge was made to President John Dramani Mahama during a courtesy visit by Miyazaki Katsura, Senior Executive Vice President of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), on Tuesday, June 3.
The Volivo Bridge will complete the vital Eastern Corridor road and is a flagship project under President Mahama’s $10 billion “Big Push” initiative. This initiative, highlighted in the 2025 national budget, plans to invest $2 billion annually over five years in key sectors including roads, bridges, education, and healthcare.
“We are pleased that the Volivo Bridge project is included in the Big Push,” Mr. Katsura told President Mahama, assuring JICA’s full support and commitment to facilitating further discussions with the Japanese government.
Mr. Katsura added that a technical team from Japan will soon visit Ghana to assess additional funding needs for the project.
President Mahama had earlier secured Japan’s funding commitment for the Volivo Bridge during his previous term in office.
He also accepted an invitation to attend the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) in August, where he plans to discuss further funding opportunities with Japanese officials to ensure the timely completion of the project.
