Mahama Promises to Clear Nurses’ Arrears

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

President John Dramani Mahama has assured nurses across the country that all outstanding allowances owed to them from January 2025 will be paid in full.

Addressing healthcare professionals during a stop on his ongoing “Thank You” tour, President Mahama said the government is fully aware of the hardship caused by the delay in disbursement and is actively working to resolve the issue.

He disclosed that the Ministry of Finance is currently implementing key measures to expedite the release of funds through the Controller and Accountant-General’s Department. According to the president, the process is well underway and nurses should begin to see results soon.

“The finance minister is working with the relevant agencies to ensure that all arrears are cleared. Nurses and other frontline health workers have shown remarkable dedication, and it is only fair that their entitlements are paid without further delay,” President Mahama stated.

He acknowledged the critical role nurses play in Ghana’s healthcare system and commended them for their service, particularly during the most difficult moments of the country’s post-pandemic recovery.

President Mahama reiterated his administration’s commitment to improving conditions within the health sector, adding that the issue of delayed payments would be tackled more efficiently going forward through improved systems and accountability mechanisms.

Several nurses who attended the event expressed cautious optimism over the president’s assurance, calling for swift action and transparency in the disbursement process.

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) has in recent weeks called for clarity and urgency in the payment of delayed allowances, warning that morale in the sector is being affected by the situation. As part of his broader engagement, President Mahama is expected to meet with other professional groups and stakeholders as he tours various regions to thank Ghanaians for their support in recent national events.
