N/R: Tamale emerging as key transit point for arms, drugs – Police Command

The Northern Regional Police Commander, ACP Wisdom Lavoe, has warned that Tamale is becoming a major transit hub for arms trafficking and illicit drugs, posing serious risks to regional and national security.
He linked the surge in arms movement to the prolonged conflict in Bawku and the region’s porous borders, which traffickers exploit to smuggle weapons and narcotics through Tamale.
“Tamale is increasingly used as a route for illegal arms and drugs moving to other parts of the country, influenced by insecurity in areas like Bawku,” ACP Lavoe said.
Speaking during a security meeting with Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed, ACP Lavoe outlined efforts to tackle the threats, including intensified intelligence operations, highway checkpoints, and collaboration with community leaders.
Several arrests related to illegal arms and drug trafficking have been made, but ACP Lavoe emphasized the need for national cooperation and investment in border security.
Minister Mohammed pledged government support to strengthen security in Tamale and urged the public to assist by reporting suspicious activities and promoting community cooperation. The visit is part of a nationwide tour aimed at assessing security challenges and coordinating responses.
