AMA boss engages street traders ahead of decongestion exercise in Accra

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Chief Executive of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has initiated direct engagement with street traders in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) ahead of a planned decongestion exercise scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

The move forms part of a broader urban renewal strategy aimed at restoring order, enhancing sanitation, and promoting organized trading within the capital, in alignment with President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed focus on sustainable urban development.

Over the weekend, Mr. Allotey, joined by the Municipal Chief Executive of Korle Klottey, led a sensitization tour of key trading hubs, including Kinbu Road, Kojo Thompson Road, Sempe Road, Swanzy Road, Market Street, and Kantamanto. These areas have been identified as critical zones for the upcoming clearance operation.

Addressing traders during the tour, the AMA boss assured them that the exercise is not a punitive measure but a coordinated effort to create a more orderly and hygienic trading environment for the benefit of both vendors and the general public.

“Our objective is to enhance the city’s image and functionality while supporting traders to operate in an organized setting. This is a collaborative process, and we are here to ensure your voices are heard,” Mr. Allotey said.

As part of the wider initiative, the Assembly plans to introduce solar-powered streetlights across major trading routes and implement a rotational trading system. The new model will allow vendors to operate in shifts, effectively extending trading hours and supporting the government’s 24-hour economy agenda.

City officials believe that the decongestion effort, if fully embraced by stakeholders, will contribute significantly to reducing traffic congestion, improving sanitation, and ensuring safety in the metropolis. The AMA has called on traders, transport operators, and residents to cooperate fully with the exercise and has pledged continued dialogue to ensure a smooth transition during its implementation.
