The rise of Caleb Pappoe – Ghana’s short-form film maestro blending creativity with AI

In an industry dominated by lengthy dramas and big-budget Nollywood influences, one filmmaker is carving a niche with bite-sized storytelling that leaves audiences craving more. Caleb Pappoe, the visionary behind viral series like Infatuations and Hidden Desires, sat down with ZED FM Tech Show to discuss his journey, creative process, and the delicate balance between artificial intelligence (AI) and authentic filmmaking.
Pappoe’s journey began humbly during his university days, hosting a TV show while nurturing a passion for filmmaking. “I was scared to dive into movies back then,” he admitted. “Ghanaian films weren’t getting much love.”
His breakthrough came with Infatuations, a self-funded project shot with just one camera. Against the odds, it became a national sensation, though many fans had no idea Pappoe was the mastermind. “I’ve always been low-key. But it’s time Ghanaians know who’s behind these stories,” he said.
Pappoe’s recent work, like Hidden Desires, has experimented with AI tools for ideation and script drafting. “AI speeds things up,” he acknowledged, recalling how it generated storyboards and even script snippets. But there’s a catch: “The results can feel generic. If two people input the same prompt, you might get identical scripts. That’s not art.”
For Pappoe, AI is a collaborator, not a replacement. While he uses platforms like ChatGPT for brainstorming, he insists human writers bring irreplaceable nuance. “God gave us creativity for a reason. AI can’t replicate the vibe check of raw emotion.”
When asked about AI’s ethical dilemmas—like deepfake actors replacing real performances—Pappoe didn’t hesitate: “Real actors only. Deepfakes lack authenticity.” He also dismissed fears of AI erasing jobs, noting, “Humans will always curate the prompts. The soul of filmmaking can’t be automated.” Pappoe’s message to aspiring filmmakers is clear: “Be original, stay consistent, and trust your gut.” He credits his faith as a guiding force, saying, “Jesus is the reason I’m here.” With ambitions to break into Hollywood — “by God’s grace.”
