GFA to introduce minimum wage structure for GPL

The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has announced plans to introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League (GPL), following approval by the Executive Council (EXCO).
The move aims to ensure fair compensation for footballers and address long-standing concerns about low wages in the domestic league, which have contributed to a mass exodus of players.
Speaking on Starr FM’s Starr Sports Digest with Benjamin Yamoah, GFA Communications Director Henry Asante Twum confirmed the initiative as part of broader reforms to professionalize the league and improve player welfare in Ghana’s top-flight competition.
“The GFA will introduce a minimum wage structure for players in the Ghana Premier League after it was approved by EXCO,” said Asante Twum.
The initiative aligns with the GFA’s ongoing efforts to raise standards in the local game, boost player motivation, and retain talent within the Ghanaian league system.
The proposed wage structure is expected to establish a baseline salary for clubs, helping to create a more competitive and professional environment for footballers across the country.
Once approved by the Executive Council, the policy will be presented to the next Congress of the FA ahead of the upcoming 2025/26 Ghana Premier League season.
