‘2023 African Games: We’ll probe financial concerns’

SPORTS and Recreation Minister-designate, Kofi Adams, has promised parliamentary action regarding financial concerns surrounding Ghana’s hosting of the 2023 African Games (which was in held in 2024).
Former Sports Minister Mustapha Ussif faced criticism over the Games’ expenditure, reportedly exceeding $245 million. This included $195 million for infrastructure, $15 million for athlete feeding during the 15-day event, and $48 million for operational costs, as justified by the Local Organising Committee.
The Forum for Accountable Governance and other groups have petitioned the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) for an investigation.
Speaking at the Accra Sports Stadium, Adams assured that due process would be followed.
“I remember in Parliament issues were raised about it. But the 9th Parliament is back, and we can see what we can do about that report,” he said.
“So, we are not ruling out anything. But let’s go through the processes first, and then we’ll see what they look into and what will come out of the loop,” Adams stated, referencing a previous parliamentary committee report on sports that was not finalised before the 8th Parliament ended.
He suggested the 9th Parliament could revisit the report or refer the issues to a committee for further review. Adams awaits parliamentary approval to officially take office.
