OpenAI, Oracle, and Softbank Join Forces for $100Billion AI Data Centre Project
OpenAI has announced a partnership with Oracle and Softbank to develop advanced data centers capable of supporting artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, with an immediate investment of $100 billion. The initiative, called Stargate, is expected to drive significant infrastructure development and economic activity.
The collaboration was unveiled at the White House, where US President Donald Trump described it as a major milestone, reinforcing confidence in the country’s potential. The project aims to accelerate AI adoption by constructing data centers that will support the growing computational needs of AI systems.
The plan includes a larger commitment to invest $500 billion over the next four years. Initial facilities are already under construction in Texas, with additional locations planned. The venture is expected to generate over 100,000 jobs, reflecting the scale and ambition of the initiative.
The announcement follows OpenAI’s earlier calls for significant investments in AI infrastructure and government involvement in fostering industry growth. The project has drawn support from UAE-backed investor MGX and global technology leaders like Microsoft, Arm, and NVIDIA, further underlining its strategic importance.
OpenAI, known for sparking the AI race with the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, has spurred widespread investment in AI-driven data centers. These facilities are critical for enabling the rapid advancements in the field but have raised concerns over their environmental and energy implications.
However, challenges such as power supply, land availability, and permitting remain significant barriers to achieving these goals. The US has already implemented measures to strengthen its position in the AI industry, including export restrictions on AI-related chips and policies promoting clean energy for government land-based data centers. Other tech giants, including Microsoft and Amazon, have also announced substantial investments in AI infrastructure. Microsoft is set to invest $80 billion in AI-powered data centers this year, while Amazon recently unveiled two $10 billion projects.
