AFC CEO urges African nations to embrace value addition

The President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Africa Finance Corporation (AFC), Samaila Zubairu, has called on African nations to prioritize value addition over the export of raw materials to foster sustainable economic growth. Speaking at the World Economic Forum’s annual meeting, Zubairu highlighted the significant economic benefits that could result from processing and manufacturing raw materials within the continent.
“Africa remains largely a primary economy, producing and exporting raw materials without value addition. This approach limits our ability to create quality jobs, build capital for banking systems, and foster infrastructure development,” Zubairu stated.
The Case for Value Addition
Zubairu underscored the transformative potential of value addition in catalyzing a chain reaction of economic benefits. By processing raw materials locally, African countries can create high-quality jobs, enabling employees to pay taxes that fund essential services like education. Moreover, increased domestic job opportunities would encourage savings, which could flow into mutual funds, stock exchanges, and pension systems.
“These savings will be used for pensions, which in turn can fund infrastructure development and provide capital for venture initiatives, particularly those led by young entrepreneurs,” Zubairu explained.
Intentional Policy Decisions
To achieve this vision, Zubairu emphasized the need for deliberate policy measures that halt the export of unprocessed materials. He urged African governments to create an enabling environment for industries focused on value addition, arguing that this approach would engage the continent’s youthful workforce, improve wages, and ensure more inclusive economic growth.
The AFC CEO’s call aligns with broader efforts to reposition Africa’s economies toward industrialization and self-reliance, which could reduce dependency on volatile commodity markets and build resilience in global trade.
Path to Sustainable Development
Zubairu’s insights resonate at a time when many African nations are grappling with the challenges of diversifying their economies. By fostering value addition, these nations can unlock new revenue streams, enhance economic stability, and secure long-term prosperity for their citizens. As African leaders deliberate on strategies for sustainable development, Zubairu’s call to action provides a clear roadmap for leveraging the continent’s abundant natural resources to drive transformational change.
