US flags Chinese tech giants over alleged military ties

The United States has identified several Chinese technology firms, including Tencent and battery manufacturer CATL, as entities allegedly connected to China’s military. The designation is part of Washington’s strategy to address perceived risks in engaging with Chinese companies linked to military advancement.

The list, maintained by the Department of Defense under Section 1260H, now features 134 companies. While inclusion on the list does not immediately result in sanctions, it serves as a caution to US businesses and could prompt the Treasury Department to take further action.

Tencent, a leading social media and gaming company, and CATL, a major battery producer, have denied the allegations. Beijing has criticized the decision as unjust, claiming it undermines international trade norms and investor confidence.

The move reflects ongoing tensions between the US and China, with Washington citing concerns over the use of technology to bolster Beijing’s military capabilities. The list also underscores rising political pressure within the US to address ties between Chinese firms and key industries.

CATL’s inclusion follows scrutiny over its planned partnership with Ford to build a $2 billion battery plant in Michigan. Meanwhile, other firms like DJI and Hesai Technologies, which have challenged their listings in court, remain on the updated roster. The decision has impacted financial markets, with Tencent’s shares dropping by 7% in Hong Kong and CATL’s by 4%. This development adds to the strained relations between the world’s two largest economies as they navigate escalating trade and security concerns.
