‘Peace pact, a significant step’

THE Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Office for West Africa and the Sahel (UNOWAS), Leonardo Santos Simão, has welcomed the signing in Accra of the Presidential Elections Peace Pact, ahead of the presidential elections, scheduled for December 7.
The signing of the Presidential Elections Peace Pact by all candidates and political parties under the auspices of the National Peace Council (NPC) is a significant step towards ensuring peaceful, transparent, and credible elections.
The Special Representative commended the work of Ghana’s National Peace Council and the cosigners for this endeavor. He called on all candidates, political parties, state institutions, and citizens of Ghana to uphold their commitments to peaceful elections in the interest of longer-term peace and development of their country. The Special Representative of the Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations support to the people of Ghana and hoped that the elections of Saturday December 7 will further deepen democratic consolidation in Ghana and the sub-region.
