Ghana’s mining sector achieves unprecedented growth, solidifies leadership in Africa

Ghana’s mining sector is experiencing remarkable growth, cementing the country’s position as a global leader in gold production and a contender for Africa’s top mining hub.
According to the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Samuel Abu Jinapor, the sector has become a cornerstone of Ghana’s economy, achieving transformative milestones in recent years.
Speaking at the 10th Ghana Mining Industry Awards, Jinapor highlighted the expansion of the mining industry beyond gold to include bauxite, manganese, and, more recently, lithium—a critical mineral for the global green energy transition. He expressed optimism about the sector’s record-breaking performance and its potential to attract sustained investments.
Record-Breaking Gold Production
Jinapor noted that Ghana has consistently increased gold production, outpacing South Africa to become the continent’s leading gold producer.
“We have worked collaboratively to position Ghana as an undisputed mining hub of Africa,” he stated. “Last year, gold production reached a record 4 million ounces. Preliminary reports for the first half of this year show production in excess of 2 million ounces, making it almost certain that we will surpass 4 million ounces again.”
This remarkable growth has significantly boosted export receipts. In 2023, gold contributed $5 billion to export earnings in the first half alone, with projections to exceed $10 billion by year-end.
Diversification and Strategic Developments
Ghana’s mining landscape is expanding with the addition of critical minerals. The country is now home to Africa’s first lithium mine, developed by Atlantic Lithium, which is expected to play a crucial role in the global transition to green energy.
Moreover, new projects like the Cadillac Namdini Gold Mine, constructed in record time, and the expansion of existing mines by Newmont, Ahaf North, and Azuma Resources, are set to further strengthen the sector’s capacity. The government’s efforts to revamp dormant mines have also contributed to this growth trajectory.
Sustaining the Sector’s Legacy
Jinapor emphasized the importance of leveraging the sector’s growth for broader economic benefits, ensuring its long-term sustainability.
“Through collaborative efforts, the mining sector remains a pillar of our national economy,” he remarked. “With new mines coming on stream and strategic expansions, we are confident this legacy will endure.”
Mining’s Vital Role in Ghana’s Economy
The minister reaffirmed that Ghana’s mining sector is not just a revenue generator but a transformative force for national development. By integrating technological advancements and fostering collaboration among stakeholders, the sector is poised to maintain its leadership in Africa while addressing emerging opportunities in critical minerals. As Ghana continues to attract global attention for its mining achievements, the country’s commitment to innovation and strategic development ensures that the mining sector remains a robust contributor to economic growth and a model for sustainable resource management.
