GHANA’S President, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, attended a prestigious cocktail reception organized by United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc to mark two major milestones—the bank’s 75th anniversary and UBA America’s 40th anniversary.

The event, held on the sidelines of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, brought together global leaders, dignitaries, and distinguished guests.

During the event, President Akufo-Addo commended UBA’s management for its unwavering commitment to uniting Africa through its banking services. He highlighted UBA’s significant contributions to the continent’s financial integration and economic development.

The high-profile reception attracted prominent figures, including Queen Maxima of the Netherlands, President Brice Oligui Nguema of Gabon, President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone, and African business magnate Alhaji Aliko Dangote, underscoring the global reach and influence of UBA.

UBA’s Group Chairman and founder of the Tony Elumelu Foundation (TEF), Tony O. Elumelu, CFR, reflected on the bank’s achievements over the past 75 years. He celebrated UBA’s status as a trailblazer in African banking, noting that UBA America remains the only African bank with a federal license in the United States, now celebrating four decades of operation.

Elumelu also emphasized UBA Ghana’s 20-year presence, lauding the bank’s strong growth in the Ghanaian market.

“UBA will continue to do what we do best—facilitating trade between Africa and the global market,” Elumelu remarked, expressing pride in UBA’s achievements as a symbol of African progress. He stressed that UBA’s journey is one in which all Africans can take pride.

Earlier in the day, President Akufo-Addo addressed the UN General Assembly, reaffirming Ghana’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance. He assured the international community that the 2024 general elections in Ghana would be conducted with integrity, ensuring free, fair, and transparent processes under the supervision of the Electoral Commission.

The President emphasized Ghana’s position as a beacon of democracy on the African continent.

Speaking at the cocktail event, World Trade Organization Director-General, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, praised UBA for its impressive performance and expansion across 19 African countries and four international locations.

She urged Africans to take pride in UBA’s success, calling it a testament to the bank’s resilience and dedication to excellence.

Other key UBA executives in attendance included Group Managing Director Oliver Alawuba, Executive Director of UBA International Sola Yomi-Ajayi, Executive Director for UBA Africa Abiola Bawuah, and Head of Corporate and Energy Banking Ebele Egbue. The event marked a momentous occasion for UBA, celebrating its legacy of banking excellence and its role in bridging Africa with the global economy.
