BoG launches gold coin to deepen financial markets

Story: By Isaac AIDOO, Accra
IN a significant move aimed at broadening financial market offerings, the Bank of Ghana (BoG) has launched the Ghana Gold Coin (GGC).
The launch undertaken by the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, was on the sidelines of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) press briefing.
It is set to provide a unique investment avenue for Ghanaians while also celebrating the country’s rich heritage as a global leader in gold production. The GGC serves as a new option for savers and investors looking to diversify their portfolios, adding a secure, resilient asset into the mix.
Key Features of the Ghana Gold Coin
The Ghana Gold Coin is minted from dore gold, refined to an exceptionally high standard of 99.99% purity, giving the coin its distinct golden hue. It is available in three sizes: 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, and 1/4 ounce, providing flexibility for investors with varying capital capacities.
The design features two national symbols, with the Ghana Coat of Arms on the front and the Independence Arch on the reverse, making it both a financial asset and a patriotic token.
Dr. Addison revealed that each coin comes packaged with a wooden storage box, a transparent coin holder, and a certificate of ownership, ensuring that buyers have a tangible, well-protected investment.
The GGC is currently only available for purchase in Ghana and must be bought using the local currency, the cedi. The coin’s price will be linked to global gold prices, determined by the previous day’s London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) Auction PM Price, with the daily rate published on the BoG’s website at 9:00 AM GMT.
Economic significance and benefits
One of the key benefits of the GGC is its role in helping the central bank manage excess liquidity within the banking sector. By issuing the GGC, the Bank of Ghana can supplement its traditional open market operations, such as the use of Bank of Ghana Bills and overnight deposits, to maintain monetary stability.
This effort to “mop up” extra cedi liquidity underscores the BoG’s commitment to controlling inflation and supporting a stable economic environment.
Beyond its monetary policy implications, the GGC offers a new investment vehicle for local savers, particularly in an environment where gold is regarded as a safe-haven asset during times of economic turbulence. Gold’s historical resilience makes it an attractive option for risk-averse investors seeking a hedge against inflation and other financial uncertainties.
As Dr. Addison noted, the issuance of the GGC “democratizes access” to gold, allowing everyday Ghanaians to benefit from the security and growth potential of this timeless asset.
Additionally, the coin is an integral part of the BoG’s Domestic Gold Purchase Program, which aims to strengthen Ghana’s foreign reserves by purchasing gold locally. By issuing the GGC, the central bank aligns with this program, ensuring that more of Ghana’s gold is retained within the domestic economy.
Responsible gold sourcing and safeguards
In keeping with global best practices, the BoG has emphasized that the gold used in the production of the Ghana Gold Coin is sourced responsibly. Under the Bank’s Responsible Gold Sourcing Framework, only gold that is traceable and mined in compliance with environmental and social standards is used. This ensures that the coin is not only an economic asset but also one that aligns with ethical mining practices.
To further safeguard the integrity of the coin’s transactions, the Bank of Ghana has implemented robust Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) measures.
These safeguards ensure that the buying and selling of the GGC remains free from illicit activities, providing an additional layer of security for investors.
Flexibility for buyers and sellers
The Bank of Ghana is also committed to ensuring that the GGC remains a liquid asset for investors. While commercial banks in Ghana will handle the buying and selling of the coin, the BoG itself will step in to facilitate transactions in cases where commercial banks are unable to purchase the coin from sellers.
This arrangement provides an assurance to investors that they can easily convert their gold coin holdings into cash, further enhancing its attractiveness as an investment vehicle.
Future prospects
The launch of the Ghana Gold Coin represents a landmark development for the Bank of Ghana as it continues to innovate and deepen the country’s financial markets. By offering Ghanaians an additional and secure investment avenue, the GGC stands as a symbol of the Bank’s forward-looking approach to monetary policy and financial inclusion.
The coin not only serves as a reminder of Ghana’s prominent position in the global gold market but also opens new opportunities for local investors to reap the benefits of this enduring financial asset. As Ghana continues to build its reserves and improve liquidity management, the Ghana Gold Coin is poised to become a valuable tool in the country’s broader economic strategy. Dr. Addison ended with a call to action, encouraging Ghanaians to embrace the new opportunity. “The issuance of the GGC is a testament to our commitment to innovation, deepening of our financial markets, and providing more avenues for residents to invest in Ghana,” he stated, underscoring the coin’s role in making the nation’s financial system more dynamic and resilient.
