Delta’s Sustainable Skies Challenge unveils future of eco-friendly aviation

Delta Air Lines has concluded its inaugural Sustainable Skies Challenge, a ground breaking initiative in collaboration with Junior Achievement (JA) Europe.
Held from May 21-22 in Atlanta, the competition aimed to harness innovative ideas from Europe’s brightest young minds to develop sustainable aviation solutions.
The challenge culminated at the GEN-E 2024 festival, which took place from July 2-4 in Catania, Italy. The festival, a showcase for emerging entrepreneurs, featured thousands of young innovators presenting their pioneering business ideas. Among the highlights was Delta’s Sustainable Skies Challenge, which spotlighted cutting-edge, eco-friendly solutions proposed by young participants.
In preparation for the final event, nine teams from across Europe engaged in a rigorous pitch competition in April. These teams presented unique solutions addressing environmental sustainability in aviation, including advanced cogeneration research and inflight uniforms made from fruit fibers. The ideas demonstrated a deep commitment to addressing climate change through innovative technology and design.
Three finalist teams, selected from JA Europe’s alumni network, were:
- Team Nocta from Lithuania
- Team Fictionnal Jobs from France
- Team The Sky Isn’t the Limit from the Netherlands
Representatives from these teams traveled to Delta’s headquarters in Atlanta to present their ideas to a panel of Delta leaders, including Tad Hutcheson, Managing Director of Community Engagement; Kelly Lauber, General Manager for Global Sustainability and Strategy; Ekrem Dimbiloglu, Managing Director of Inflight Entertainment and Wi-Fi Experience; and Gail Grimmett, S.V.P. of Sustainability Performance & Strategic Partnerships.
The winning team, The Sky Isn’t the Limit, proposed a transformative approach to making the airline food supply chain more sustainable. Their innovative business plan impressed the panel and underscored the practical impact of their solution.
At the GEN-E 2024 festival, Delta representatives Tricia Rumola, General Manager of Community Engagement, and Matteo Curcio, Senior Vice President for EMEAI and JA Europe Board Member, served as judges for the Upper-Secondary competition. The Delta Air Lines Sustainable Innovation Award was presented to Plantech, a startup with a self-watering plant pot technology controlled via an app. This innovation aims to simplify plant care for busy individuals, promoting a greener lifestyle.
Matteo Curcio expressed enthusiasm for the competition and Delta’s commitment to sustainability, emphasizing the importance of supporting youth in their quest for innovative solutions. In a special podcast episode recorded before the festival, Curcio noted, “There is no idea or initiative too small to explore, so don’t let the difficulties deter you. [Delta] supports organizations like Junior Achievement because we’re teaching youth how to be stewards for the future. The solutions exist; we just have to create them.” The success of the Sustainable Skies Challenge highlights Delta’s dedication to sustainability and its role in fostering a greener future for aviation. The partnership with Junior Achievement, spanning 30 chapters across five continents, continues to drive meaningful change and inspire the next generation of innovators and entrepreneurs.
