By Daniel NONOR, Jubilee House

President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged for continued American support to ensure the forthcoming elections in Ghana are conducted freely and fairly. The call was made during a meeting with Kurt M. Campbell, the Deputy Secretary of State of the United States, who led a delegation to Jubilee House on Monday.

“We are committed to upholding Ghana’s standing as a beacon of democracy in Africa during the upcoming election in December,” President Akufo-Addo stated.

He emphasized that his government remains committed to conducting a transparent electoral process where the voice of the Ghanaian people resonates in the selection of the new President and members of Parliament.

Highlighting the enduring Ghana-US relationship, President Akufo-Addo acknowledged the pivotal role the United States has played in bolstering Ghana’s democratic institutions.

“We are grateful for the consistent assistance and support from the United States, particularly through our Electoral Commission and other vital institutions,” he stated. “We anticipate working closely once more to ensure a successful outcome.”

Security concerns in the region were also on the agenda of their discussions. President Akufo-Addo underscored the growing threat posed by jihadist insurgency in the Sahel, which he described as the foremost security challenge for West African states.

“The possibility of insurgents collaborating with Gulf of Guinea pirates to destabilize our region is a significant concern,” he added, emphasizing ECOWAS’s focus on resolving the Sahel’s security crisis.

In response, Kurt M. Campbell expressed appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated America’s commitment to supporting Ghana.

“Our discussions encompassed engagements with key business leaders, financial experts, and tech-savvy youth,” Campbell stated.

He said the visit underscored the United States’ dedication to constructive collaboration across all critical areas for Ghana’s advancement.
