De Sa Named Black Stars Assistant Coach

Former Orlando Pirates coach Roger De Sa is set to join renowned tactician Carlos Queiroz as assistant coach of Ghana’s national team ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

According to South African outlet KickOff, De Sa has finalised negotiations with the Ghana Football Association after agreeing on personal terms. While details of the deal remain undisclosed, his contract is expected to run alongside Queiroz’s reported four month tenure.

De Sa confirmed he is ready to begin work immediately, revealing he will arrive in Accra this week.

“I will fly out on Thursday to Accra to start working straight away,” said the former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper in an interview with KickOff.

He explained that the appointment of Queiroz happened swiftly following the departure of the previous coach.

“I think when the previous coach left, the Ghana FA looked at Carlos Queiroz and it happened very quickly. Within four to five days, it was done,” he said.

The 61 year old has a long standing working relationship with Queiroz, having served as his assistant during Egypt’s run to the final of the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations and also during Iran’s campaign at the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Despite his experience, De Sa admits the task ahead will not be straightforward. He pointed to limited preparation time and the challenge of assembling a competitive squad as key concerns.

“I have been watching a lot of footage and assessing players across different clubs,” he said. “The biggest challenge is selecting a team without enough time. Preparation is also very short. You have about two weeks to get the team ready.”

He added that such pressures are part of the job at the highest level.

“It is not easy. It will be difficult, but that is the nature of the game,” he said.

It remains unclear whether De Sa will be present when Queiroz is officially unveiled on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Alisa Hotel.
