450,000 free tablets for student ready for distribution next week – Dr Adutwum

Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has unveiled plans for the distribution of 450,000 free student tablets, heralding the launch of a groundbreaking educational program funded by the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFUND).
This initiative, part of the Smart School Project, is designed to equip public Senior High School and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) students nationwide with digital resources.
The tablets, totaling 1.3 million, will be distributed in three phases, with the initial batch destined for 32 selected schools across the country.
President Akufo-Addo’s recent announcement underscored the government’s commitment to digitizing all sectors, particularly education, to enhance accessibility and interactivity for students.
Dr. Adutwum elaborated that these tablets are multifunctional, featuring keyboards that enable students to use them as laptops or standalone tablets.
Each tablet also includes a power bank and a solar panel, ensuring sustainable charging solutions, especially in areas with unreliable power infrastructure.
Moreover, the Minister emphasized a gradual shift from traditional textbooks to digital resources, aligning with a broader strategy to modernize the education sector.
ICT Coordinators in schools will train teachers on effectively integrating these digital tools into the curriculum.
Addressing concerns about budget allocation amidst challenges facing the Free SHS policy, Dr. Adutwum clarified that funds allocated for the tablet project cannot be diverted to address logistical issues within the Free SHS program.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to both initiatives, distinguishing between budgetary constraints and logistical challenges.
In response to potential tablet malfunctions or mishandling by students, Dr. Adutwum assured that schools with large populations will have dedicated repair centers onsite.
Drawing from his experience in the United States, he highlighted students’ responsible behavior when entrusted with valuable educational tools.
The tablet distribution initiative represents a significant advancement in enhancing digital literacy and access to educational resources for Ghanaian students.
With meticulous planning and strategic implementation, the government aims to ensure the success and sustainability of this transformative educational initiative, aligning with broader efforts to modernize the country’s education sector.
