Winnifred Ntumi wins gold and 2 silvers medals

Weightlifter Winnifred Ntumi has made Ghana proud by clinching the first medals for the country at the ongoing African Games in Accra.

The 21-year-old athlete secured gold and two silver medals in the women’s 49-kilogram category, showcasing her remarkable talent and determination on the international stage.

Competing at the GCB Hall at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ntumi’s exceptional performance earned her silver medals in both the Snatch and Clean and Jerk categories, along with a gold in the overall 49kg category, marking a significant achievement for Ghana in the event.

In the Snatch category, Ntumi’s lift of 63 secured her second place behind Mauritius’ Sheridane Pasnin (64), who claimed the gold medal.

She outperformed competitors from Madagascar and Tunisia to secure her spot on the podium.

Tunisia’s Tasnim Ben Wada claimed gold in the Clean & Jerk with a lift of 81, narrowly edging out Ntumi’s lift of the same weight.

However, Ntumi’s performance secured her another silver medal in this category, solidifying her position as one of Africa’s top weightlifters in her weight class.

This is not the first time Ntumi has brought glory to Ghana in weightlifting.

In 2019, she secured three medals for her country at the games in Rabat, Morocco.

She has also earned bronze medals at various international competitions, including the African Championships in Cairo and the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

Despite her successes, Ntumi has faced challenges, including the threat of quitting the sport if she cannot secure employment.

She emphasized the importance of the Ministry of Youth and Sports and the National Sports Authority (NSA) providing employment opportunities for athletes to ensure their continued participation in sports and to provide them with a sustainable source of income.

Ntumi’s remarkable achievements at the African Games highlight her dedication and talent, bringing pride and inspiration to her nation and fellow athletes.
