Accra 2023: Sports Minister inspects Games Village

Minister for Youth and Sports, Mr. Mustapha Ussif, conducted a working visit to the accommodation facility designated as the Games Village for the 13th African Games, ahead of its soft opening scheduled for next week.
The International Halls at the University of Ghana, including Alexander Kwapong Hall, Hilla Liman Hall, Jean Nelson Hall, and Elizabeth Frances Sey Hall, have been allocated as the Games Village to accommodate approximately 7,000 athletes and officials during the Games.
Accompanied by the Chief Director of the Ministry, Mr. William Kartey, and the Chairman for the Games Family and Village Accommodation Services Committee, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, the Minister inspected the progress of work done so far to prepare the facility for the athletes and officials.
During the inspection, the Minister reviewed various aspects of the facility, including the transportation bay, access routes, clinic, accreditation center, restaurant, kitchen, as well as areas designated for welcome ceremonies and other entertainment services.
Expressing gratitude to the contractors for their efforts, the Minister urged them to intensify their efforts to ensure the timely completion and handover of the facility before the arrival of the teams.
He emphasized the government’s commitment to hosting a successful event, highlighting the importance of the Games Village in showcasing Ghana’s renowned hospitality.
Committee Chairman, Mr. Ben Nunoo Mensah, assured the Minister of maximum security and safety measures for the athletes throughout the Games. Project Manager, Mr. Michael Essilfie, pledged to meet the given timelines and ensure that the village is fully prepared for the participants.
Teams participating in the 13th African Games are expected to begin arriving in Accra from March 1, with the official opening of the Games scheduled for March 8.
Table Tennis and Badminton events will commence on March 3 at the Borteyman Sports Complex.
