‘Change is coming’: Mahama declares in New Year Message
In his New Year Message delivered via a video broadcast, former President John Dramani Mahama expressed optimism about being sworn in as the President of Ghana on January 7, 2025. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) flag bearer acknowledged the challenges faced by Ghanaians and outlined a comprehensive plan developed by his team to create jobs and alleviate the sufferings of the people.
Mahama urged citizens not to lose hope and called for support for the NDC to bring about change and transform the economy. He criticized the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Government for what he described as “reckless mismanagement” of the economy and “profligate” expenditure at the expense of socio-economic and infrastructure development. According to Mahama, 2023 continued the trend of hardship, high living costs, and worsening poverty, with the 2024 budget offering “no hope” for improving people’s lives.
The former President emphasized the need for drastic action to reset the nation on the right path. One of his key areas of focus would be addressing high unemployment levels and meeting the aspirations of the youth through targeted investments in education and skills development. Mahama announced that in April 2025, the new NDC Government would introduce a new budget to support and build small businesses, adjust taxes as incentives for job creation, and implement a proposed 24-hour economy policy, which he believes will be a “game changer” for revitalizing the economy. The policy aims to maximize productivity and efficiency by extending business hours and operations around the clock to create a more vibrant economy and well-paying jobs.
