Bukom Banku retires from boxing, passes torch to children

By Enoch Fiifi FORSON, Accra

Braimah Isaac Kamoko, renowned as Bukom Banku, has officially declared his retirement from professional boxing, citing a desire to pave the way for the next generation, particularly his children, to carry on his legacy.

Bukom Banku, who earned a bronze medal in the heavyweight division at the 1999 African Games in South Africa, laid a strong foundation for his illustrious professional career.
Over the years, he became a dominant force in the ring, amassing an impressive record of 29 victories in 30 fights.

His only defeat occurred in a match against Bastie Samir in October 2017.

In an interview with Okay FM, Bukom Banku shared the reasons behind his decision to retire, stating, “I’ve grown, and at the same time, my eye is also paining me, so I don’t want to fight again. Three of my children are boxers, so I’ve left everything for them. I’ve packed my gloves and my shoes, all for them, Abu Kamoko and Mustafa Kamoko. I’ve laid the path so they can continue.”

Looking ahead, the Ghanaian boxing icon revealed his plans to venture into comedy and host concerts.

“I have stopped boxing, and I’m starting comedy and some shows I do by myself,” he added.

Bukom Banku, who fought a significant portion of his professional career in Africa, particularly Ghana, achieved notable success, including a victory in the United Kingdom against Hungarian Ferenc Albert after three rounds in 2019.

As the curtains close on his boxing career, Bukom Banku aims to transition into new ventures, leaving an indelible mark on the sport and opening doors for the next generation of fighters, particularly his children, to carry the torch forward.
