Ghanaian Men Are Not Stingy, Women Demand Too Much – Stonebwoy

Ghanaian dancehall artiste Stonebwoy has challenged the perception that Ghanaian men are naturally frugal, arguing that some women contribute to the growing impression by placing excessive financial demands on their partners.

The award-winning musician made the remarks during a recent podcast interview while in the United Kingdom preparing for his BhimFest Concert in London.

Stonebwoy said changing expectations around relationships and lifestyle have created financial pressure for many men, particularly young men who are expected to spend beyond their means to prove their love and commitment.

“Ghanaian men are not stingy. It is you who want men to overspend on you,” he said.

According to the artiste, some women increasingly expect their partners to finance lifestyles that may be beyond their current financial capacity, creating unrealistic standards in modern relationships.

He cited the growing desire among some young women to live what he described as the “Birkin lifestyle” as an example of the pressure men face to provide expensive items and experiences.

Stonebwoy argued that such expectations were not as common among previous generations, pointing to the relationship between his parents’ generation as an example.

“Our mothers never put that kind of pressure on our fathers,” he said.

The musician’s comments come amid wider conversations about financial responsibilities in relationships, with debates often centred on whether men should be expected to shoulder most of the expenses associated with dating and marriage.

Stonebwoy suggested that financial demands should be considered within the realities of an individual’s circumstances rather than used as a measure of affection.

He maintained that expecting men to constantly spend beyond their means can create unnecessary pressure and distort the understanding of what genuine love and commitment should entail.

The artiste’s remarks have since contributed to the ongoing public conversation about changing relationship expectations, social media influence and the financial pressures facing young people.

The “Birkin lifestyle” reference also highlights the influence of luxury fashion and social media on perceptions of success and romantic relationships, where expensive gifts and experiences can sometimes be portrayed as evidence of a partner’s love or financial strength.

Stonebwoy’s comments suggest that couples should have more realistic expectations and avoid equating excessive spending with genuine affection.

As discussions around gender roles and financial responsibilities in relationships continue, his remarks are likely to fuel further debate over whether modern expectations have become unnecessarily demanding for young Ghanaian men.
