No more shoe and belt removal at checkpoints – GACL

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has introduced advanced security screening equipment at the passenger checkpoints of Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen aviation security while enhancing the overall passenger experience.

The newly installed screening technology is expected to make security procedures faster and more efficient by allowing passengers to keep laptops and other large electronic devices inside their cabin baggage during screening. This eliminates the need to remove such items manually before they pass through the screening machines.

Under the upgraded system, passengers will also no longer be required to remove their shoes and belts during routine security checks. However, GACL noted that travellers may still be asked to remove these items if they are selected for additional screening based on established security profiling procedures.

The company further explained that the new equipment allows passengers to leave liquids, aerosols and gels in their cabin baggage while undergoing screening. Despite this improvement, GACL stressed that existing aviation security regulations remain fully in force. As such, passengers are reminded that liquids exceeding 100 millilitres per container are still prohibited in cabin baggage and will continue to be subject to current restrictions.

In addition to the upgraded screening equipment, GACL has installed an Automatic Tray Return System at the checkpoints. The new system is designed to speed up the screening process by ensuring the rapid return of trays after passengers complete security checks, enabling travellers to repack their belongings more quickly and helping to improve the overall flow through the security area.

According to GACL, the transition to the new screening technology will be carried out in phases alongside the existing screening equipment and operational procedures. This phased implementation is intended to ensure uninterrupted airport operations while personnel and passengers gradually adapt to the new system.

The company has appealed to passengers and all other stakeholders to cooperate with airport security officials during the rollout period, expressing confidence that the upgraded technology will enhance security standards while making the screening process more convenient and efficient for travellers using Terminals 2 and 3 at Kotoka International Airport.
