Govt Suspends Fuel Taxes to Reduce Pump Price Hikes

In a swift response to rising global fuel costs, President John Dramani Mahama has directed the temporary suspension of selected fuel taxes and pricing margins, following an emergency Cabinet meeting convened today, April 9, 2026. The measure is intended to reduce pump prices and ease the financial burden on consumers.
The announcement was made by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, who explained that the Ministers of Finance and Energy have been mandated to ensure a reduction in fuel prices in the next pricing window. The suspension is set to take effect for four weeks, with a possible review depending on developments in the Middle East and global crude oil price movements. Cabinet noted that details of the specific taxes and margins to be suspended will be communicated during the next pricing window.
In addition to fiscal interventions, the Minister for Transport has been tasked with fast-tracking the deployment of 100 new Metro Mass Transit buses. These buses are expected to operate on high-traffic routes and provide commuters with lower fares than those currently offered by private transport operators, thereby mitigating the impact of rising transport costs.
The Cabinet also reaffirmed President Mahama’s earlier directive requiring all ministers and senior government appointees to comply fully with the cancellation of fuel allocations and allowances. The move forms part of broader cost-control measures aimed at ensuring fiscal discipline and prudent use of public resources.
The intervention comes as fuel prices in Ghana have come under renewed pressure due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which have disrupted global crude oil supplies and contributed to rising transport fares and the cost of goods and services. The increases have placed additional strain on households and businesses, prompting urgent calls for government action.
Cabinet indicated that the measures are designed to provide temporary relief while authorities closely monitor global developments to determine the appropriate next steps. The administration reiterated its commitment to protecting consumers and stabilizing the domestic market amid volatile international energy conditions.
