Accra–Tema Motorway Expansion Set for August 2027 Completion

The expansion of the Accra–Tema Motorway is on track for completion by August 2, 2027, following the settlement of all outstanding debts owed to contractors working on the project.

This assurance was given by the Project Manager, Engineer Ben Sackey, during an inspection tour led by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Agbodza, on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.

According to Mr. Sackey, the project team is working within the established timeline and has not made any provisions for an extension. He expressed confidence that the deadline would be met if current progress is maintained.

“We have not programmed for an extension, so we are confident of maintaining the August 2, 2027 completion date,” he stated.

The Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, also reaffirmed government’s commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the project, stressing the importance of the motorway to national transportation and economic activity.

However, contractors on site raised concerns about potential challenges that could affect the schedule. Chief among them is the relocation of utility lines, which they described as a complex and time-consuming process requiring close coordination among multiple stakeholders.

They cautioned that any delays in handling these utilities such as water pipes, electricity cables and communication lines could slow down progress if not addressed promptly.

The reconstruction and expansion project, which commenced on January 2, 2024, covers a 19.5-kilometre stretch from the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange to the Tema Roundabout. It involves upgrading the existing road into a 10-lane highway to accommodate increasing traffic volumes along the busy corridor.

Despite earlier reports of slow progress, officials insist that ongoing financial and technical interventions will help accelerate the pace of work.

When completed, the expanded motorway is expected to significantly reduce congestion, improve travel times, and enhance road safety for thousands of commuters who use the route daily.
