Interior Ministry Declares Good Friday, Easter Monday Public Holidays
The Ministry of Interior has declared Friday, April 3, and Monday, April 6, 2026, as statutory public holidays to mark this year’s Easter celebrations.
In a statement issued the Ministry confirmed that the two days, observed as Good Friday and Easter Monday, are to be recognized nationwide. The declaration allows Christians across the country to commemorate one of the most important periods on the Christian calendar, reflecting on the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Good Friday, on April 3, signifies the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, while Easter Monday, on April 6, continues the celebrations following his resurrection. The Easter period is traditionally marked by church services, family gatherings, and social events, giving Christians the opportunity to observe the spiritual significance of the season.
Popular destinations, such as Kwahu, are expected to attract large crowds for the annual festivities, as people travel to participate in community and cultural events. Families also prepare and share traditional Ghanaian dishes, adding a local flavor to the celebrations.
Addressing the public, Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, encouraged citizens to observe the holidays in accordance with the law while reflecting on the spiritual importance of Easter. “The general public is hereby informed that Friday, 3rd April 2026, and Monday, 6th April, mark Good Friday and Easter Monday, respectively, which are Statutory Public Holidays and should be observed as such throughout the country,” the statement read.
The Ministry’s declaration ensures that businesses, institutions, and organizations comply with statutory holiday regulations, allowing Christians across Ghana to participate fully in the Easter celebrations. It provides an official framework for observing the period with reverence and respect.
