Define Leadership to Drive Organisational Alignment – Coach

Leadership Coach, Prince Ampofo, has urged organisations to clearly define what leadership means within their structures, warning that failure to do so can lead to confusion, misalignment, and inefficiency.

Speaking on Business Breakfast on Zed FM, Mr. Ampofo explained that in the absence of a shared definition, employees are likely to operate based on personal interpretations of leadership, which can vary widely across an organisation.

“If leadership is not defined, we all come to work with our own definitions,” he said. “For some, it may mean the CEO; for others, the board; and for some, it may simply mean making money.”

He noted that while elements of leadership are often embedded in an organisation’s vision and mission, they are frequently not made explicit enough to guide employee behaviour and decision-making.

“The shadow of an organisation’s leadership is usually hidden in its vision and mission,” he stated, adding that without a clear and deliberate definition, employees may lack direction and cohesion.

Mr. Ampofo cautioned that such a situation can result in a workforce that appears unified but is, in reality, moving in different directions.

“We can be a people, but all headed in different directions because we are not aligned by definition,” he said.

To address this challenge, he stressed the importance of clearly communicating what leadership looks like in practical terms within the organisation. This, he said, should include expectations around behaviour, performance, and value delivery.

“People must know what it means. Leadership could mean showing up on time or providing value to the customer in a specific way,” he explained.

He also noted that once leadership is properly defined, it can serve as a foundation for training, performance management, and internal communication, ensuring that every department understands its role in achieving the organisation’s goals.

According to him, even teams such as marketing must recognise how their functions contribute to delivering value to customers, reinforcing a shared sense of purpose across the organisation.

Mr. Ampofo highlighted that clearly defining leadership is the first step toward building alignment, improving performance, and creating a cohesive organisational culture.

The Leadership Coach further called on organisations to deliberately distinguish between job positions and leadership roles to foster a stronger sense of responsibility and initiative among employees.

He noted that while many organisations, particularly through their human resource (HR) structures, clearly define roles and job descriptions, they often fall short in helping employees understand that leadership is not limited to titles or hierarchy.

According to him, a major gap in many workplaces is the assumption that junior staff inherently understand that they are also leaders within their respective spaces. He argued that such assumptions are ineffective and must be replaced with intentional efforts to build that mindset.

Mr. Ampofo encouraged employees to view their workplaces not just as sources of income, but as powerful platforms for personal growth, learning, and long-term success.

He stressed that working for someone provides a valuable opportunity to develop skills and gain experience in ways that may not be possible independently.
