Gov’t Lifts Nalerigu Curfew After Security Improves
The Government has lifted the curfew imposed on Nalerigu and its surrounding communities in the North East Region with immediate effect, citing improved peace and security in the area.
In a statement issued, the Ministry of the Interior announced that the decision was taken by the Interior Minister, acting on the advice of the North East Regional Security Council and by Executive Instrument.
Nalerigu, the capital of the North East Region, had been under curfew as part of measures aimed at maintaining law and order amid heightened security concerns. The restriction formed part of broader efforts by authorities to prevent the escalation of tensions and safeguard lives and property.
According to the Ministry, the lifting of the curfew follows a comprehensive assessment by the Regional Security Council, which determined that calm has been restored and the security situation has stabilised sufficiently to warrant the withdrawal of the restriction.
“The decision was taken upon advice from the North East Regional Security Council after a thorough review of the security situation,” the statement noted.
While announcing the directive, government called on traditional and community leaders to help sustain the prevailing peace.
“Government continues to urge Chiefs, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and People of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them and to use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace in the area,” the statement said.
Authorities further encouraged residents to prioritise dialogue and constructive engagement in resolving disputes to consolidate the gains made in restoring order.
Security analysts say the lifting of the curfew signals growing confidence in the stability of the area, though they stress that sustained cooperation among residents and security agencies remains crucial.
The removal of the restriction is expected to restore normal economic and social activities in Nalerigu and its environs, offering residents relief after weeks of limited movement.
