Prez. Mahama Commissions New Ghana Embassy in Addis Ababa

President John Dramani Mahama has commissioned a new chancery for Ghana’s Embassy in Addis Ababa, describing the project as a major milestone in strengthening the country’s diplomatic footprint in Africa.

The ceremony, held in Ethiopia’s capital, marks a renewed push by Ghana to reinforce its presence within continental institutions, particularly the African Union, whose headquarters is based in Addis Ababa.

In a Facebook post on Monday, February 16, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the new facility represents more than just an administrative office.

“This edifice is more than an office complex. It symbolises Ghana’s unwavering belief in multilateralism and our enduring commitment to the vision and ideals of the African Union,” he stated.

According to the Foreign Affairs Minister, the commissioning of the chancery also underscores Ghana’s determination to deepen bilateral ties with Ethiopia and strengthen cooperation across the continent.

“It reflects Ghana’s resolve to consolidate our relations with Ethiopia and signals President Mahama’s readiness to assume the Chairmanship of the African Union in 2027,” Mr. Ablakwa noted.

The project has been nearly a decade in the making. Funding for the chancery was secured in 2016 under the SG-SSB facility. However, construction stalled in subsequent years due to economic challenges that affected project continuity.

Government officials say work resumed under the current administration, which moved to settle outstanding Interim Payment Certificates (IPCs) last year to ensure completion.

President Mahama, speaking at the commissioning, emphasised the importance of investing in diplomatic infrastructure to advance Ghana’s foreign policy objectives.

“Our diplomatic missions must reflect the dignity and aspirations of our nation. This chancery stands as a testament to Ghana’s commitment to African unity and constructive engagement on the global stage,” he said.

The new embassy complex is expected to enhance Ghana’s diplomatic operations in Ethiopia while reinforcing its strategic role within continental affairs.
