SHC Warns Land Encroachers to Regularize Claims Within 21 Days

By: Maame Efua Kwaduah

The State Housing Company Limited (SHC), in partnership with the Ministry of Works, Housing and Water Resources, has issued a firm directive to individuals and organizations illegally occupying or developing state-owned lands across Ghana.

This move follows a recent nationwide review that revealed extensive unauthorized use of SHC property, which has hindered the company’s efforts to deliver affordable housing to citizens.

In a statement SHC revealed that the review identified multiple sites where construction, leasing and other activities were taking place without proper documentation or approval from the company.

In response, SHC has demanded that all affected parties immediately halt any activity on its lands and report to the nearest SHC office within 21 days to confirm their claims and explore options for legal regularization.

Authorities emphasized that these measures are necessary to maintain proper land management, prevent misuse of public assets and ensure orderly urban development. Individuals who fail to comply with the deadline risk enforcement actions, which may include legal proceedings, repossession of property, and removal of unauthorized structures. SHC said it will also coordinate with relevant state security agencies to ensure compliance.

The company has also urged the public to exercise caution in land transactions, advising potential buyers and developers to verify the legitimacy of all dealings directly with SHC. This precautionary step aims to protect citizens from financial loss and prevent the exploitation of state lands by unauthorized actors.

By implementing these measures, SHC aims to safeguard state assets, promote responsible development and strengthen public confidence in land management practices. The 21-day notice serves as both an opportunity for encroachers to regularize their interests and a clear signal that illegal occupation will not be tolerated.

The initiative underscores SHC’s commitment to enforcing the law, preserving public land, and advancing its mission of providing quality housing solutions to Ghanaians across the country.
