Slot Laments Bad Luck as Liverpool Prepare for Sunderland Clash

Liverpool head coach Arne Slot believes misfortune has played a significant role in his side’s struggles this season, as the Reds prepare for their league encounter against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light.

Slot made the remarks during his pre-match press conference, coming off the back of Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester City at Anfield. The loss marked the club’s eighth league defeat of the campaign and left them sixth in the standings.

Despite taking the lead through a stunning free-kick from Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool were unable to hold on, conceding twice to hand City all three points.

Reflecting on the season so far, Slot suggested that beyond dropped points, injuries have also compounded the team’s difficulties. Several key players have spent time on the sidelines, including record signing Alexander Isak, who has missed multiple games through injury.

“It feels like that, that is for sure,” Slot said. “I even said that sometimes when we sign a player and he’s not even playing for us, he gets injured. The number of late goals we have conceded, especially in extra time, is far more than usual. Is it bad luck or are we to blame?”

The Dutch coach admitted he has tried different tactical approaches to address Liverpool’s defensive issues late in games, but with little success.

“I have tried many different things. I’ve made defensive substitutions and we conceded, and I’ve kept the same players on and we still conceded. We’ve tried a lot, so I can say we haven’t been lucky. That is definitely true,” he explained.

However, Slot was quick to stress that dwelling on misfortune could be counterproductive, urging his players to remain focused on performance and improvement rather than external factors.

“The moment you start feeling everything is bad luck, it comes to you even more. So we should keep that away as much as possible and just focus on the performance focus on what we can do to improve,”

Liverpool will look to bounce back against Sunderland as they aim to revive their push up the Premier League table.
