Kotoko Task Caretaker Coach Owusu to End Season Strong

Asante Kotoko have tasked caretaker coach Prince Yaw Owusu with replicating the fairytale success of Roberto Di Matteo by steering the club to a strong finish this season.

Owusu has been placed in temporary charge of the Porcupine Warriors and will be assisted by Mohammed Hamza Obeng following the resignation of head coach Karim Zito.

Zito stepped aside after Kotoko’s elimination from the MTN FA Cup at the hands of Aduana FC, a result that compounded the club’s inconsistent domestic campaign.

Kotoko have managed just one Ghana Premier League win in 2026 and currently sit fifth on the table, eight points adrift of leaders Medeama SC.

Speaking in media interview, the club’s Communications Director, Sarfo Duku, said the interim technical team will be given the opportunity to prove their capabilities before a long-term decision is taken.

“For now, we will allow him to work and see how things unfold,” Duku said. “Based on his performance, we will know the next step to take. We expect them to bring their experience, exposure and knowledge to bear.”

When asked about expectations, Duku referenced former Chelsea manager Roberto Di Matteo, who famously took over as interim coach and led the English side to UEFA Champions League glory in 2012.

“Caretaker coaches have produced good results in the past. The classical example is Di Matteo at Chelsea. Now that they have been given the chance to be at the helm, they should prove to the world that they have something in them,” he noted.

Owusu and his technical team face an immediate test when Kotoko take on arch-rivals Hearts of Oak in the Super Clash at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on February 15.
