Ghana Stock Exchange Surges Through the Week, Closing on a High Note

By Praisebell Rosemond Larbi

The Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) wrapped up the week on a strong and upbeat note, as renewed investor interest, surging trading volumes and rising indices combined to deliver one of the market’s most vibrant performances in recent weeks.

Trading opened on Monday, December 8, 2025, on a relatively cautious footing. The GSE Composite Index (GSE-CI) began the week at 8,630.50 points, recording only marginal movement as investors adopted a wait-and-see approach. A total of 616,052 shares were traded, valued at GH¢1.23 million, while market capitalisation held steady at GH¢167.9 billion, reflecting early-week stability rather than aggressive positioning.

Activity picked up sharply on Tuesday, which emerged as the most active session of the week up to that point. Trading volumes surged to 10,864,447 shares with a total value of GH¢29.4 million. Despite the heavy turnover, the GSE-CI dipped slightly to 8,628.21 points, suggesting a balanced tussle between buyers and sellers rather than broad-based selling pressure. The spike in volumes injected fresh energy into the market and signalled growing investor engagement.

Wednesday saw a moderation in activity, with 1,578,626 shares changing hands at a value of GH¢2.35 million. The benchmark index rebounded modestly to 8,634.75 points, recovering earlier losses and reinforcing the market’s underlying resilience. Thursday maintained this calm tone, as trading volumes eased further to 408,041 shares valued at GH¢1.36 million. The GSE-CI remained unchanged at 8,634.75 points, while market capitalisation stayed broadly stable at just under GH¢167.8 billion.

The week, however, ended with a dramatic flourish on Friday. Trading volumes soared to 13,086,286 shares, with transactions valued at GH¢12.39 million. The GSE-CI jumped to 8,679.19 points, delivering a strong close and pushing market capitalisation up to GH¢168.5 billion. The robust end-of-week rally reflected renewed confidence as investors moved decisively to take advantage of emerging opportunities.

The GSE Financial Stocks Index (GSE-FSI) also posted an impressive performance. From its previous close of 4,500.14 points on Thursday, the index surged by 44.1 points to finish Friday at 4,544.24 points. On a year-to-date basis, financial stocks continue to outperform, with gains exceeding 90 per cent, well ahead of the broader market’s growth of about 77.5 per cent.

Overall, the week’s trading pattern highlighted a market characterised by cautious beginnings, midweek bursts of activity and a powerful finish. Rising volumes, firm market capitalisation and strengthening indices underscore a market in solid health, as investor confidence remains strong heading into the closing weeks of the year.
